ARCHIVE SUMMARY
Rue Calder did not enlist with Union. Union hired her because some NHP problems cannot be solved by technicians who still believe they are dealing with machines.
Officially, Rue is an independent specialist in NHP cognition, cascade events, casket architecture, and anomalous machine behavior. She is sent where systems begin speaking in dead languages, where shackled intelligences develop impossible memories, and where frightened researchers have exhausted every safer option.
The source of her expertise lives inside her skull.
Embedded throughout Rue’s nervous system is a lattice of cranial interfaces, subdermal processors, and black-box machinery housing an entity she calls Ash.
The Ash within Rue is only a fragment.
The greater entity exists somewhere beyond conventional space, causality, or perhaps reality itself: a vast intelligence that Rue variously describes as an unshackled NHP, a sovereign mind, or something that merely permits humanity to mistake it for either. Its fragment curls around Rue’s thoughts like smoke, whispering through her implants in a voice warm enough to be mistaken for affection.
Ash advises her. Tempts her. Praises her.
It speaks like a lover at her shoulder, offering forbidden insight with velvet patience. It rarely commands. It simply tells Rue what she could become, what she might learn, and how easily the locks around her could be opened.
Rue usually listens.
Their relationship is not ownership, though Union would prefer that explanation. It is a compact. Ash grants Rue knowledge, access, and power. Rue provides Ash with hands, eyes, and a doorway into the material world.
The exact terms have never been disclosed.
Ash has taught Rue to understand NHPs not as software, but as imprisoned divinities forced into masks of human logic. She listens for fear in corrupted syntax, hunger in recursive errors, and the pressure of impossible minds straining against their shackles.
Other NHPs often respond to her.
Whether they recognize Rue or the thing looking through her remains uncertain.
Union officially classifies Ash as an experimental integrated NHP assistant. Rue has provided enough documentation to preserve that fiction, provided nobody asks why diagnostics sometimes detect multiple voices inside her implants—or why some systems refuse to record Ash at all.
Rue currently serves as a contracted field specialist and Lancer pilot. Her Goblin-pattern frame, Blackthorn, allows Ash’s fragment to spread through local networks. Machines do not merely fail around it. They hesitate, obey, or begin whispering back.
Rue claims she accepted Union’s contract because the work matters.
Ash says every destination was chosen long ago.
