Session 11, Grave of the Witness pt.1
Date: 2026-04-24
Summary
The party found themselves stranded in the Bronze Citadel deep within Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells, reeling from the fallout of Korrilla's betrayal. Vagnfríður had thrown their employer out a window after being banished to a harrowing vision of the soul coin mint in Dis, and now the group sat in their room at the Ashen Cup with no clear way home. Cicerox had been handed off to the Arcanoloth Nhalzura, Korrilla was gone, and the party was left holding nothing but the weight of their predicament. Velessa suggested that Mizora might be someone who could help them escape. Séantal then identified Mizora as the shadowy advisor to Grand Duke Ravengard, recalling that Russora's diary had mentioned her as a knowledgeable contact with deep ties to the Hells. Velessa then proposed a desperate but clever plan — summoning her imp familiar, Quillbit, directly to Avernus and then dismissing her back to Baldur's Gate to carry a message to Russora Eomane to contact Mizora.
When Quillbit materialized in a puff of infernal smoke, she took one look around and immediately began shrieking in protest. After a heated exchange involving abyssal chickens, contractual obligations, and the promise of a very good future reward, the furious little imp agreed to deliver the message before being dismissed back to the Material Plane. While they waited, the party debated their other options — reaching out to Raphael, finding hidden portals, or even attempting to travel the River Styx aboard a Merrenoloth ferry — but each path seemed more dangerous or impractical than the last. Velessa also quietly disclosed that someone had tasked her with planting something in Mizora's office, a confession that made her feel deeply uneasy the moment she said it aloud.
After Russora delivered the message, they waited for some time. A flash of infernal fire erupted in the middle of the room, followed by a billow of smoke, and out stepped Mizora herself — radiant, unhurried, and entirely unbothered by the fact that she had just walked through a wall in the Nine Hells. She crossed the room, flopped onto the couch, and casually propped her legs up on Vagnfríður's back as though the tabaxi were a piece of furniture. With a smirk and a sip of wine, she invited the party to tell her all their woes.
Mizora made it clear she was already well-informed. She knew about Russora, about Korrilla, about Raphael, and — most unsettlingly — about the Calamus Pactum. She dismissed Raphael as a simple collector too preoccupied with his toys to be a genuine threat, and she offered the party a way home in exchange for their continued care and mentorship of Russora Eomane. The deal was struck quickly, with Mizora also promising to expedite Velessa's adoption paperwork for the girl as a bonus. After reviewing the paperwork for the eight imps the party had acquired, she opened a portal crackling with the flames of Avernus and ushered everyone through.
On the other side, the party found themselves back in the library of Eomane House. Russora came sprinting in and threw herself at Mizora before remembering to greet Velessa as well, while little Nysene Eomane immediately latched onto Vagnfríður's leg and refused to let go. Mizora settled into a comfortable chair and turned the conversation to more pressing matters — she was deeply troubled by the presence of the Calamus Pactum in the city and even more disturbed to learn that a Red Wizard named Maelra, an agent of the Regent of Thay, was operating in Baldur's Gate under various disguises. She noted that Maelra had once been romantically involved with Saresha Imravel, a woman Mizora held in high regard, and resolved to speak with Saresha herself.
Then Velessa confessed. She told Mizora that the Cambion Nerezza, who ran a menagerie, had tasked her with planting a "bug" in Mizora's office to spy on her. Mizora's response was swift and deeply unsettling — to summon the creature out and destroy it, she pressed a single fingertip just above Velessa's navel, and Velessa felt something writhing inside her gut begin to move upward. A foot-and-a-half long millipede, covered in the symbols of Asmodeus, crawled up through her throat and out of her mouth as she collapsed to her knees, retching violently. Mizora plucked the creature by the tail, crushed it into ash and smoke, and then gently stroked Velessa's head, murmuring a soft "good girl" for having the honesty to come forward.
Vagnfríður, with Nysene still clinging to her leg, made her way to the kitchen and prepared a simple but comforting meal of chicken and bread — a deliberate antidote to the foul food of the Hells. Seris followed with a fruit and alcohol-based dessert that proved so good it effectively erased the lingering taste of the infernal parasite from Velessa's memory. Mizora stayed for the meal, and the conversation turned to the party's next steps. They reviewed two available contracts and settled on the one titled "Grave of the Witness," drawn in part by a symbol of Selûne etched at the bottom of the posting and a favor owed to the cemetery workers of Tumbledown.
After cleaning up and changing clothes, the party made their way to the Elfsong Tavern, where they were to meet the person who had posted the job. The bartender, Alan Alyth, called out the name Seraphine, and what followed was a spectacular entrance — a tall Dragonborn paladin of Selûne tripped over two patrons, knocked over a drink, and scrambled to the bar with the energy of someone who had been waiting anxiously for hours. Seraphine Moonscale was enthusiastic, warm, and almost aggressively friendly, immediately complimenting Velessa and Seris on their blue color schemes and declaring them "twinsies." Vagnfríður paid for the round of drinks without a word, which earned her an enormous and slightly awkward hug from the dragonborn. Seraphine then proceeded to down three cocktails in rapid succession before the party had finished their first.
Seraphine explained the job in earnest. For the past four nights, three lantern-bearing figures had been seen leaving through the Cliffgate and entering the Tumbledown cemetery at around two in the morning. Three graves had been disturbed — all belonging to women of the Szarr family — and while no valuables were taken, the bodies had been medically examined, each bearing a small prick on the fingertip. A cemetery laborer and a night watchman who had gone to investigate had since vanished without a trace. Seraphine, a member of the Order of the Gauntlet, had wanted backup before following the figures herself, and so she had posted the job to the board with the help of a contact at the Brampton Outpost.
The group set out through the foggy streets of Baldur's Gate, with Seraphine lighting the way by muttering a prayer to Selûne that caused her sword to glow with a soft moonbeam. She and Seris sang a sea shanty about Shadowdale as they walked, and Velessa shared the grim story of how she had lost her leg to a druid in bear form during a coming-of-age ritual — a story that left Seraphine wide-eyed and sympathetic. By the time they reached the Cliffgate, Seraphine had sobered herself with a quiet prayer, kneeling in the street with her sword planted between the cobblestones as a soft moonbeam fell over her. She rose composed and dignified, and the group passed through into Tumbledown.
At the cemetery, a hard-eyed gravekeeper confirmed that the three disturbed graves all belonged to women connected to the Szarr family — Amelia Szarr, Francesca Szarr, and a servant named Theophanu. Séantal recalled from city records that the Szarr family had once been one of the most powerful dynasties in Baldur's Gate's history, their land eventually becoming the Tumbledown district itself. A reclusive patriarch named Cazador Szarr had appeared in the city decades ago before vanishing around the time of the Absolute Crisis, after which the Szarr Mansion had passed to a retainer named Violet. Investigating the disturbed sites, the party found that the intruders had walked in a direct line from the cemetery entrance to the Szarr family plot without deviation, and Shane discovered a set of boot prints near one of the graves — one boot missing a crescent-shaped chunk near the toe, leaving behind what looked unmistakably like the impression of bone. The party concluded they were likely dealing with an animated skeleton whose boot had partially rotted away, and with the clock ticking toward two in the morning, they settled into position among the crooked stones and leaning mausoleums to wait.
Short
Stranded in the Bronze Citadel of Avernus following Korrilla's betrayal, the party devised a plan to escape by summoning Velessa's imp familiar, Quillbit, and sending her back to the Material Plane with a message for Russora Eomane. Based on Séantal's recollection of Russora's diary, the group identified Mizora — the shadowy advisor to Grand Duke Ravengard — as a potential contact with the knowledge and connections to help them get home. Their wait was short-lived, as Mizora herself appeared in a burst of infernal fire, entirely unbothered and already well-informed about the party's situation, including the Calamus Pactum. She struck a deal with the group, offering them passage home in exchange for their continued mentorship of Russora, and also promised to expedite Velessa's adoption paperwork for the girl. Before stepping through the portal Mizora opened, Velessa confessed that a woman named Nerezza had tasked her with planting something in Mizora's office. Mizora responded by extracting a foot-and-a-half-long millipede covered in the symbols of Asmodeus from Velessa's gut, crushing it to ash, and offering a quiet word of praise for Velessa's honesty. Back at Eomane House, Mizora expressed serious concern over the presence of the Calamus Pactum in Baldur's Gate and the activities of a Red Wizard named Maelra, an agent of the Regent of Thay operating in the city under various disguises.
After regrouping with a comforting meal prepared by Vagnfríður, the party reviewed available contracts and selected one titled "Grave of the Witness," drawn by a symbol of Selûne and a favor owed to Tumbledown's cemetery workers. At the Elfsong Tavern, they met their contact: Seraphine Moonscale, an enthusiastic and slightly chaotic Dragonborn paladin of Selûne who explained that for four consecutive nights, three lantern-bearing figures had been seen entering the Tumbledown cemetery around two in the morning. Three graves belonging to women of the Szarr family had been disturbed, with each body bearing a small prick on the fingertip, and two workers who had gone to investigate had since vanished. Séantal recalled that the Szarr family had once been one of Baldur's Gate's most powerful dynasties, with a reclusive patriarch named Cazador Szarr having disappeared around the time of the Absolute Crisis. At the cemetery, the party found that the intruders had walked in a direct line to the Szarr family plot, and Shane discovered a boot print with a crescent-shaped chunk missing near the toe — strongly suggesting an animated skeleton. With the clock approaching two in the morning, the party settled into position among the graves to wait.
Classic
Last we left off, our party found themselves stranded deep within Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells, reeling from the betrayal of their employer Korrilla. With no clear path home and few allies left to call upon, Velessa devised a desperate gambit — summoning her imp familiar Quillbit directly into the Hells and dismissing her back to Baldur's Gate to carry word to Russora Eomane. The message was meant to reach Mizora, a shadowy and powerful devil with deep ties to the city, whom Séantal had identified as someone who might be able to pull them out of their predicament. What they did not expect was for Mizora to answer quite so personally — stepping through a wall of infernal fire, flopping onto the couch, and propping her legs on Vagnfríður's back as though she owned the place. She already knew everything, offered them a way home in exchange for their continued mentorship of Russora, and opened a crackling portal back to the Material Plane before the party had time to fully process what they had agreed to.
Back in Baldur's Gate, reunions were warm and the food was mercifully real — Vagnfríður cooked, Seris produced a dessert so good it nearly erased the memory of infernal cuisine, and Mizora stayed for the meal. But the evening was not without its horrors. Velessa confessed that a woman named Nerezza had tasked her with planting something in Mizora's office, and Mizora's response was to press a single finger to Velessa's stomach and coax a foot-and-a-half long millipede — covered in the symbols of Asmodeus — up through her throat and out of her mouth. Mizora crushed it to ash, stroked Velessa's hair, and called her a good girl. Meanwhile, Quillbit returned from her errand riding an abyssal chicken she had apparently decided to keep.
With the worst of it behind them, the party turned their attention to a new contract — "Grave of the Witness" — and made their way to the Elfsong Tavern to meet their employer. What awaited them was Seraphine Moonscale, a Dragonborn paladin of Selûne who tripped over two patrons on her way to the bar, drank three cocktails before anyone else had finished their first, and immediately declared Velessa and Seris "twinsies" for their matching blue color schemes. Beneath the enthusiasm, however, was a genuine and troubling case: three graves in the Tumbledown cemetery — all belonging to women of the Szarr family — had been disturbed over four consecutive nights, the bodies bearing small pricks on their fingertips, and two workers who had gone to investigate had since vanished. The party made their way through the fog to the cemetery, uncovered boot prints suggesting an animated skeleton among the intruders, and now wait in silence among the crooked stones and leaning mausoleums as the clock ticks toward two in the morning...
Memorable Moments
Mizora presses a fingertip to Velessa's stomach to summon and draw out a foot-and-a-half long millipede "bug" covered in symbols of Asmodeus from her throat to destroy it, then crushes it to ash — all while gently petting Velessa's head and saying 'good girl.'
Velessa had just confessed to being tasked with planting the "bug" in Mizora's office to spy on her, not knowing the Cambion's creature had already taken root inside her
