Summary
The battle in the Lost Library of Lethchauntos raged on as Vagnfríður channeled her ancestral power, her body swelling to an enormous size as she carved through cultists with devastating swings of her great axe. Quillbit, the imp familiar bound to Velessa, fluttered across the chamber carrying caltrops while Séantal attempted to blast their enemies with arcane energy, though her attacks went wide. The party pressed their advantage as Vagnfríður turned her attention to Aglana, Maelra's bodyguard, landing a solid blow that left the woman reeling but still maintaining her magical hold on Seris.
Maelra Szandru, the Red Wizard of Thay, stood before the shelf containing the Nathlum and addressed the paralyzed paladin with cold amusement. She acknowledged that Saresha had sent them and complimented their progress before raising her hand, fingertips crackling with fiery orange sparks. Without hesitation or remorse, she unleashed a cone of flames that engulfed not only her enemies but her own bodyguard as well. Aglana turned to look at her mistress with absolute betrayal in her eyes as the fire scorched her, though she managed to resist the worst of the magical assault.
Shane seized the opportunity presented by the chaos, taking careful aim from the shadows and striking Aglana with a devastating attack that brought the bodyguard down. As Aglana fell, the magical restraints holding Seris vanished, freeing the paladin to rejoin the fight. Séantal attempted to strike Maelra with a bolt of radiant energy, but the spell went wide and dissipated harmlessly. Vagnfríður continued her assault on the remaining cultists, her massive form dominating the battlefield as she cleaved through another enemy.
Seris, finally free from her magical bonds, struck at Maelra with her weapon, landing a solid blow that caused the Red Wizard to look genuinely offended. The tide of battle had clearly turned against Maelra, and she assessed the situation with calculating eyes. Using her magic to teleport across the room in an instant, she fled through a doorway while shouting at her remaining forces to engage the party. Pirates emerged from the adjacent chamber, but Quillbit had already prepared a trap, dropping caltrops across the threshold that wounded the first man who charged through.
Séantal responded to Maelra's retreat by casting a spell that plunged the room into magical darkness, disorienting the pirates within. Vagnfríður advanced on the remaining enemies, her enormous size causing one pirate to immediately throw up his hands in surrender, claiming the meager payment he'd received wasn't worth facing her. The party accepted his surrender, and he stepped aside to let them pass. Another pirate emerged from the darkness and managed to land two solid strikes against Vagnfríður with his daggers before his companion also fell or surrendered.
Maelra reappeared in the main chamber using her teleportation magic once more, her fingertip transforming to ice as she launched a frozen bolt at Seris. The Red Wizard surveyed the carnage around her—her forces decimated, her bodyguard dead, and the party still standing strong. With pragmatic calculation, she made an offer: she would leave behind a pouch of gold if the party would take the Nathlum back to Saresha and allow her to depart unharmed. After brief deliberation, the party agreed to her terms, and Maelra teleported to the top of the stairs and vanished, ending the confrontation.
With the battle concluded, the party collected their spoils, including the gold Maelra had left behind and various items from Aglana's body—a sealed invitation, a broken Harper pin, and an assortment of coins. Velessa immediately claimed the Nathlum from the shelf and began examining it, her scholarly curiosity overwhelming her caution. As she read through the book's contents, she discovered it contained information on rare poisons and powerful magical wards, but something about the tome felt wrong. The pages seemed to shift and change, and the book felt heavier than its apparent size suggested.
Determined to uncover the book's secrets, Velessa performed a ritual to identify its magical properties. The magic revealed that the Nathlum was "thirsty," and on instinct, she applied blood to one of its pages. Thin red script rose from the margins in tight, angular letters, and the mundane pages separated from newly revealed text written in infernal script. After another ritual to comprehend the foreign language, Velessa and the party learned that the hidden pages described an intense ritual of world-shaping proportions, drawing power from the Nine Hells.
While Velessa studied the book, the rest of the party explored the remaining chambers of Lethchauntos's library. They discovered a forge room where Vagnfríður found a magnificent great axe resting on an anvil. When she grasped its handle, she felt emotions that weren't her own—curiosity, trepidation, excitement, and remorse—flowing from the weapon itself. In Lethchauntos's bedchamber, decorated entirely in black, they found fine clothing, a magical cloak of protection that Seris claimed, and a rapier that Shane took for its ability to create magical disguises.
The party opened another chamber that revealed a personal space cluttered with writing materials and smelling faintly of ink and old perfume. Inside a chest, they discovered magical scrolls, a pearl, a book on infernal contracts, and most intriguingly, an unsent letter from Maelra to Saresha. The final unexplored area led to a wide ledge overlooking a dark chasm, with thick spider webs visible far below and a small headstone on the far side. Quillbit flew across and found a platinum wedding band on the gravestone inscribed "Ona, beloved wife."
When Quillbit returned with the ring, Vagnfríður expressed strong disapproval at desecrating a grave, leading to a heated debate among the party about the morality of taking it. Despite arguments about the ring's value and the age of the site, Vagnfríður remained firm in her conviction that the grave should be respected. Eventually, the party relented, and Quillbit flew back across the chasm to return the ring to its resting place. With their exploration complete, they retrieved the goblin they had left tied up in the barracks, who expressed relief and a newfound wariness of "shady bitches in red robes" before going back to sleep.
The party made their way back through the sewers and emerged into the fresh air of Baldur's Gate's Wide district. They traveled to Eomane Manor, Velessa's family home, where her younger sibling Telenna greeted her with comments about her foul smell. After cleaning themselves with minor magic and taking a proper rest, they prepared to deliver the Nathlum to Saresha. That evening, they arrived at the Imravel Exchange to find Saresha helping her employees close up shop for the night.
Saresha welcomed them warmly and led them to her office, where she changed into more comfortable clothing while they discussed their experience. When the party presented the Nathlum and confronted her about Maelra and the book's infernal contents, Saresha's face showed genuine disappointment. She admitted she had hoped they would avoid encountering Maelra entirely and expressed relief that they had survived, though she seemed saddened to learn that Maelra still lived. When shown the letter from Maelra, Saresha quickly read the first lines before putting it away, her breath catching with emotion.
Velessa studied Saresha carefully during this exchange and felt with absolute certainty that the woman was being earnest and honest, her sadness genuine rather than performative. Séantal, meanwhile, noticed that all of Saresha's office decorations, clothing, and trade goods were distinctly Thayan in origin. When confronted about this, Saresha confirmed that she was indeed Thayan and that the Imravel Exchange was a sanctioned trade enclave. She explained that her political differences with Maelra stemmed from their opposing views on Thay's leadership—Saresha belonged to the merchant class and opposed the current regime's treatment of anyone who wasn't a wizard.
The party then revealed the invitation they had found, addressed to Maelra for a gathering at the Eomane residence—one of Baldur's Gate's influential Patriar families. Saresha's curiosity was immediately piqued, and she offered the party a deal: attend the party in Maelra's place, and they could keep anything of interest they found in exchange for reporting back what they learned. She paid them their agreed-upon fee of one hundred gold pieces each in platinum and promised to provide them with fine clothing suitable for such a high-society event. As servants brought in food and strong drink, the party settled in to plan their approach to infiltrating the Eomane gathering, with Quillbit contentedly making herself an enormous sandwich from the charcuterie board while Velessa used magic to feed her sleeping familiar.
Short
The party battled through the Lost Library of Lethchauntos, with Vagnfríður using her ancestral power to grow enormous and devastate cultists with her great axe. Maelra Szandru, the Red Wizard of Thay, callously unleashed a cone of flames that engulfed both the party and her own bodyguard Aglana, who looked at her mistress with absolute betrayal before Shane struck her down. With Aglana's death, the paralyzed paladin Seris was freed and immediately struck Maelra, forcing the Red Wizard to reassess the battle. After teleporting around the chamber and watching her forces crumble—including pirates who surrendered when faced with Vagnfríður's massive form—Maelra pragmatically offered to leave gold behind if the party would take the Nathlum to Saresha and let her escape. The party agreed, and Maelra teleported away, ending the confrontation.
After looting the library and claiming various magical items including a sentient great axe for Vagnfríður, a cloak of protection for Seris, and a disguise-creating rapier for Shane, Velessa examined the Nathlum and discovered its dark secret. By applying blood to its pages, she revealed hidden infernal text describing a world-shaping ritual drawing power from the Nine Hells to draw power from something powerful. The party also found an unsent letter from Maelra to Saresha and a sealed invitation to an Eomane family gathering. After a moral debate led by Vagnfríður, they returned a platinum wedding band to a grave they had disturbed. They delivered the Nathlum to Saresha at the Imravel Exchange, where she revealed she was Thayan herself—part of the merchant class opposing the wizard-dominated regime that Maelra supported. Intrigued by the invitation to the Eomane gathering, Saresha offered the party a deal: attend the high-society event in Maelra's place, keep anything interesting they found, and report back what they learned. She paid them their fee in platinum and promised to provide appropriate clothing for the infiltration.
Classic
Last we left off, our adventurers delved deep into the Lost Library of Lethchauntos, where they confronted the Red Wizard of Thay, Maelra Szandru, and her forces in a desperate battle for the mysterious tome known as the Nathlum. Vagnfríður's ancestral rage transformed her into a towering force of destruction, carving through cultists and pirates alike, while Shane struck from the shadows with deadly precision. When Maelra unleashed a cone of flames that consumed friend and foe without hesitation—her own bodyguard Aglana meeting a fiery betrayal—the tide turned decisively against the Red Wizard. Recognizing her defeat, Maelra made a pragmatic offer: gold in exchange for safe passage and the party's agreement to deliver the Nathlum to Saresha. The party accepted, and the Red Wizard vanished into the shadows.
With the battle won, the party explored the ancient library's hidden chambers, discovering magical treasures and dark secrets. Velessa's scholarly curiosity led her to unlock the Nathlum's true nature—a blood-bound tome containing infernal rituals of world-shaping power, detailing the five seals of the drow and drawing energy from the Nine Hells itself. Meanwhile, Vagnfríður claimed a sentient great axe that whispered emotions not her own, and the party uncovered an unsent letter from Maelra that hinted at a deeper history between the two Red Wizards. A heated debate erupted when Quillbit retrieved a platinum wedding band from a grave marker, with Vagnfríður's conviction about respecting the dead ultimately prevailing.
Returning to Baldur's Gate, the party delivered the Nathlum to Saresha at the Imravel Exchange, where truths began to unravel. Saresha revealed herself as a Thayan merchant opposed to her homeland's wizard-dominated regime, her political rivalry with Maelra rooted in their conflicting visions for Thay's future. When presented with the invitation to an exclusive gathering at the Eomane estate—addressed to Maelra herself—Saresha offered the party a new opportunity: infiltrate the high-society event in the Red Wizard's place and report what they discover. Now, with platinum in their pockets and the promise of fine clothing befitting Baldur's Gate's elite, our adventurers prepare to navigate the treacherous waters of Patriar politics, where the dangers may prove far more subtle than any blade or spell...
